Our story

Jon started The Colour Tree as a loose collection of people that gradually morphed into a band playing slightly off-centre melodic rock. As things began to take shape, Jon returned to writing original songs, trying to create music that matched the band’s emerging sound. The only problem was—he couldn’t quite explain what that sound was, even to himself, which made things more complicated than they needed to be.

Many of his early songs didn’t make the cut, which slowed progress considerably. To keep things moving, Jon started reworking other songs into something that felt more in line with what the band had started calling the “Colour Tree vibe.” That’s when things started to click.

A turning point came when a couple of band members suggested revisiting a few of the rejected tracks—songs like Fallen Trees and Zaire—which, somewhat unexpectedly, became some of the band’s most liked and requested material.

Momentum really picked up about three years ago when Caz joined. She brought not only fresh songwriting ideas but also a similar sense of what the Colour Tree sound should be—despite the fact that neither she nor Jon can quite define it. Still, they both know it when they hear it.

Meet the Band

  • Burak - Bass

    Burak plays bass for The Colour Tree and The Ties. After spending over 10+ years playing electric guitar with Alcaband, he’s now having fun exploring the bass. Influenced mostly by blues, Burak loves being part of the live music scene and making music with friends. He’s a big fan of Telecasters and the trusty P Bass, enjoying the laid-back groove of the low end.

  • Jon - Lead Guitar/ Vocals

    Jon grew up in a musical family surrounded by a wide range of influences, from Latin rhythms to Russian classical music. He played in a folky rock band with some Canadian proto-hipsters before life took him in another direction. A few years ago, he returned to music, playing covers in a loose collective before turning back to original songwriting.

    Never quite settling on a genre, Jon draws from prog, jazz, trip-hop, classic rock, and more—naming influences like Uriah Heep, Jonny Clegg, Jeff Beck, Anathema, and Portishead. He’s still chasing that cross-genre, lyric-led melodic sound, he’d also quite like to do a dark musical.

  • Caz - Lead Vocals

    Her debut band appearance Caz is finally living her childhood dream and stepping out on stage. Brought up going to musical theatre, Caz is no stranger to live music. Now with an eclectic taste in music spanning from rock ballads to EDM. She always looks forward to bringing her positive energy and passion for singing to live audiences, instead of just to the inside of her car.

  • Shane - Keys/ Rhythm Guitar

    Shane has been involved in the local music scene since 2016. Originally starting and a solo performer on guitar and then adding piano to his repertoire during lockdown, he is able to adapt to multiple styles and genres. Greatly influenced by the music of the 60’s Shane can often be seen performing anything from the Beatles to George Ezra. In addition, to the band Shane also performs solo and is an experienced magician.

  • Paul - Drums

    Gigging around Yorkshire at Duchess of York, Alhambra Palace, festivals and Royal Park with Angelo Palladino and Quemada on same line up as Men they couldn't hang, Hazel o Connor when not providing house band for jazz and blues club at the Royal Park, Leeds 6. Influenced/ inspired by art blakey, Stewart Copeland and my late father, a swing drummer who taught Mick Avory of the Kinks. Nothing I like more than swinging with the band.
